The Miriam Gala and Auction Roaring into the 20s

A “Roaring” Success: Annual Gala and Auction Exceeds all Goals - Raises over $1 million for The Miriam

Miriam Hospital Gala Chairs SafronsThe Miriam Hospital’s largest fundraiser was switched from an in-person event to a virtual-only affair out of an abundance of caution over COVID-19 concerns and the rise in transmission rates of the Delta variant. Still, the annual gala and auction, which was chaired by Howard Safran, MD, and his wife, Nancy (pictured right), proved to be a “roaring” success—raising over $1 million, which will help support and advance the world-class, compassionate care the hospital delivers to the community it serves.

At the 1920s-themed event, which was dubbed “Roaring into the 20s” and livestreamed from the WaterFire Arts Center on Saturday, September 11, The Miriam’s President Maria Ducharme (pictured below) applauded the giving spirit and unwavering support of attendees, telling guests: “I now have a front row seat to the power of philanthropy, and I am simply awestruck by, not only your generosity, but what it means to our staff to know there’s an army behind them, supporting them…valuing them.”

Miriam Hospital President Maria DucharmeSusan H. Kaplan, Chair of The Miriam Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, echoed Dr. Ducharme’s sentiments and framed up for guests how truly meaningful their contributions were. “The opportunity we have tonight will not only impact today’s patients or 100 patients,” she said, “but generations of families for years to come, changing the trajectory of lives. This is transformational giving at its best.”

Sponsorship and ticket sale proceeds from the gala will go to The Miriam’s Greatest Needs Fund for a New Generation, which provides vital resources to support patient care services, educational programs, and innovative research projects.

Dollars raised at this year’s auctions and fund-a-need are targeted for the creation of The Center for Innovative Cancer Research at The Miriam Hospital, which will establish The Miriam as a leading provider for advanced, highly novel cancer treatments not only in Rhode Island, but within New England and the nation. A very generous anonymous donor and the Hassenfield Family Foundation each contributed $100,000 towards the successful launch of the fund-a-need effort and received The Miriam’s heartfelt thanks for their inspiring leadership gifts.

Of course, The Miriam Hospital also extends its sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone who helped make the 2021 Gala and Auction possible, including their generous sponsors, auction donors, and entire donor community.

Best of show: The highlights

The 90-minute event was emceed by “celebrity” host, Robert Redford, and showcased some amazing live entertainment, courtesy of the SweetBeats band and tap dancers, Will and Ally; both of whom helped transport guests back to the era of prohibition, flappers, and all things glamorous. Professional auctioneer, Harry Santa-Olalla, presided over two very lively auction segments and encouraged hundreds of donors to pledge their support. The evening also featured a moving story from a patient, his family, and his team of physicians from The Miriam who discussed the impact advanced treatments and clinical trials can have on outcomes.
