First-Ever Virtual Event Draws 300+ Guests, Raises $330,000

During a first-of-its-kind in the nearly 100-year history of The Miriam Hospital, the hospital’s largest fundraiser moved online, drawing more than 300 guests and raising $330,000 on Thursday, July 16. Dubbed The Miriam Hospital Cares, the live, half-hour virtual event was a tremendous alternative to the hospital’s traditional annual Gala & Auction, which was canceled in response to the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.

For thirty, action-packed minutes, Miriam friends from all over flocked to their computers and mobile devices to show their support for frontline heroes and salute their lifesaving work amid a global pandemic. Read more

Anonymous Gift Helps Ostomy Center Expand Service

The Ostomy Center at The Miriam is the only facility in Rhode Island dedicated to providing treatment and support to ostomy patients and their families and caregivers. The center—which is currently located in the Fain Building but moving to 180 Corliss Street in August— offers pre-operative counseling for patients who are to undergo creation of an ileostomy, colostomy, urostomy, or continent diversion, as well as comprehensive post-operative evaluation, guidance, wound care treatment and management. Alan H. Litwin Honored as Person of the Year at 2019 Annual Meeting

Not even a severe downpour could dampen the celebratory feel that filled The Miriam’s Sopkin Auditorium when the hospital’s Foundation Board of Trustees hosted its 2019 Annual Meeting on September 26.

During their remarks, hospital president Arthur Sampson and foundation board chair Susan H. Kaplan both thanked donors for their incredibly generous support and shared highlights of the past year. Among them were two prestigious accolades from U.S. News and World Report, including a first-ever national ranking for urology services, and the Gold Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses – the highest designation of excellence conferred by a national nursing organization. Dollars raised through the 2019 Miriam Gala & Auction: Grease is the Word! auctions and fund-a-need will help expand The Miriam Hospital’s colorectal cancer program to treat more patients while improving outcomes and quality of life in three crucial areas: navigation, which provides emotional support and guidance throughout the cancer journey; survivorship, a program that addresses the often complex physical, mental, and emotional transitions from treatment to recovery; and patient assistance, which helps alleviate the financial burden of a cancer diagnosis so patients can focus on healing.
