Congratulations to Dr. John Murphy

A Message from Timothy J. Babineau, MD, Lifespan President and CEO

May 14, 2020

Dear Colleague:

During this unprecedented and challenging period, Dr. John Murphy has been a calm eye at the center of the storm. Whether spearheading the Lifespan response to COVID-19, or stepping back from the brink of retirement to take on a new role as president of Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, his wise, steady and empathetic leadership has been invaluable.

So I’m delighted to share the news of a well-deserved honor, one that speaks to his true calling as a physician: Dr. Murphy is being honored with the prestigious Dennis W. Jahnigen Award from the American Geriatrics Society for his pioneering work to build a better health care workforce for us all as we age, the highest award this society confers.

Among his many professional accomplishments during a 37-year career as a physician, Dr. Murphy served as the president of the American Geriatrics Society in 2008 and 2009 and as its board chair in 2010. He has lectured nationally and internationally, has published widely on aging and primary care for elders, and is a professor of medicine and family medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

At Lifespan, Dr. Murphy’s role as executive vice president for physician affairs has included acting as lead physician for all Lifespan hospitals, overseeing system-wide quality and safety, graduate and continuing medical education, Lifespan Physician Group, and leading the establishment of service lines in cardiology and cancer, among others.

Please join me in congratulating him, and read more about the award here.

In the steadfast pursuit of excellence, I remain,

Sincerely yours,

Timothy J. Babineau, MD
