A Well-Deserved Honor for TMH President Arthur Sampson

Arthur SampsonWhen Providence Business News announced on Friday, March 22, the winners of its 2019 C-Suite Awards, our own Arthur Sampson, president of The Miriam Hospital and member of the Lifespan CEO's Council, was among them. He is being honored as the Career Achiever in the awards that recognize executives in the public, private and nonprofit sectors who are innovators, trailblazers, role models, and leaders in the community.

With 44 years of health care experience, Sampson has been president of The Miriam Hospital since 2012, and previously rose through the ranks to become president and chief executive officer at Newport Hospital. He holds a master’s degree in health care administration from the George Washington University and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Under Sampson’s leadership, The Miriam Hospital consistently has been recognized at the national level for quality and exceptional patient care. Most recently, the hospital was named to the prestigious 2019 IBM Watson Health Top 100, which showcases the best-performing hospitals in the United States based on clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics.

A select few of the other accolades The Miriam achieved on his watch include:

  • The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification for total hip and knee replacement for a second consecutive year (2017- 2018)
  • Number one ranking in Rhode Island and US News and World Report 2018 review of Best Regional Hospitals.
  • Six consecutive A grades from the Leapfrog Group.
  • Achievement of Magnet status for nursing excellence; The Miriam is one of only four hospitals nationwide to earn this distinction five consecutive times.
  • Sampson has served Lifespan with distinction in all roles that have required his leadership, and our system is the premier health care provider in the state, in part, because of his efforts.

The Miriam’s leader is more than an exceptional health care executive. A warm and genuine person, Sampson is an avid skier and runner, an enthusiastic member of Team Lifespan, and an animal lover. As part of his efforts to serve the community, he has shared his talents as a pianist and chef at benefits for the American Heart Association.

Please take the opportunity to congratulate Sampson for being honored with the 2019 C-Suite Career Achiever award. The awards dinner and ceremony will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25 at the Omni Providence Hotel.
