First-Ever Virtual Event Draws 300+ Guests, Raises $330,000 for The Miriam

Arthur SampsonDuring a first-of-its-kind in the nearly 100-year history of The Miriam Hospital, the hospital’s largest fundraiser moved online, drawing more than 300 guests and raising $330,000 on Thursday, July 16. Dubbed The Miriam Hospital Cares, the live, half-hour virtual event was a tremendous alternative to the hospital’s traditional annual Gala & Auction, which was canceled in response to the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.

For thirty, action-packed minutes, Miriam friends from all over flocked to their computers and mobile devices to show their support for frontline heroes and salute their lifesaving work amid a global pandemic.

The event was emceed by local radio host, Tara Granahan of WPRO, and featured an inspirational opening message from celebrity guest Meredith Vieira and a moving vocal performance by Rhode Island’s own Billy Gilman. Miriam Hospital President Arthur J. Sampson shed light on the impact of the coronavirus on the hospital, followed by a COVID-19 survivor and Miriam patient sharing their story.

Capping off the evening was a special Moment of Giving, led by Harry Santa-Olalla, that saw hundreds of donors pledge their support to help create respite rooms for hospital staff, the acquisition of additional U/V disinfecting lights, and fund The Miriam’s areas of greatest need.

The Miriam Hospital extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to everyone who helped to make The Miriam Hospital Cares a success beyond our wildest expectations!
