$184,000 Gift to Recovery Center Funds Family Support

Rhode Island Hospital recently received a generous $184,000 gift from the Gruben Charitable Foundation to fund the Lifespan Recovery Center’s Family Education and Support Program. Since opening last June, the center has been recognized by state and health care leaders for its unique position to address the opioid epidemic.

Wesley Gwaltney had his first seizure at age 11. Ever since, epilepsy’s debilitating symptoms mounted and impacted the Westerly native’s quality of life. As a teen, he gave up driving after a frightening car crash. As a college student, the frequency of seizures created havoc on his academics and social life.

John Peterson Memorial Basketball Tournament
Raises More than $25,000

To close Mental Health Month, Bradley Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital hosted the first annual John Peterson Memorial Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, May 30 in the East Providence High School gymnasium. The fundraiser was held to honor the memory of John Peterson and his dedication to patients struggling with mental illness.

Brian Ott, M.D., honored with lifetime achievement award

The Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Physicians has awarded Brian Ott, M.D., FACP, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Center at Rhode Island Hospital, the Milton Hamolsky Lifetime Achievement Award. Ott has served as director of the center, the largest memory diagnostic and treatment center in Rhode Island, since 2005. Read more>

A group of researchers at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University, along with two international co-authors, have published a study in Scientific Reports that found aberrant stem cells may play a previously unexamined role in osteoarthritis, a debilitating condition affecting more than 30 million Americans.
